Digs: Danielle and Family
Meet our good friend Danielle and family.....these #digs are one for the books! These clever creatives transformed their Victorian mansion into a major modern display of bouistrous color and coveted design. Danielle has filled the house with wildly impressive art, political winks, and a bit of satire, with a taste-level thats straight-up exalted. Christy Kurtz Harmon photographs the tour.
Danielle and family are near and dear to our heart...we were neighbors in Brooklyn and are now lucky enough to have them just a stones throw away in the bookend town of South Orange. They just might be the most fun people we know and their home reflects just that. You could cool-hunt in every corner, but perhaps the most special place in the home is the attic art-studio where Danielle has rediscovered her curiosity and talents as an artist here in the #boburbseast!
Danielle's home is both pristine and energetic. She plays with color, scale, and pattern in a way that's totally infectious.
She's an unparalleled hostess- we've had the pleasure of participating in many a dinner party or dance night. (side note..there is a HOT TUB in the backyard to boot!)
People blocks by Andy Rementer and small prints are Mike Perry.
Danielle, her husband Thomas, Tate (1) and Desmond (5).
Chandelier by Flos and wooden ship built by Thomas' dad.
The record cabinet is by USM Haller. The large war painting is a traditional sound system Pico painting Danielle had commissioned in Columbia . The ink blue chairs are Prouvé Fauteuil de salon lounge chairs from Vitra.
Print on the built in is by Thomas and Justin Fines. White rug from Anthropologie.
Danielle jokes "I am terrible at decorating bookshelves for some reason. The large sculpture was a wedding gift to us - artist unknown, tree trunk vase is by Hay,
Ronald Regan blow up doll I found at an antique shop in Connecticut and thought it was hilarious. I am not a republican but I do like collecting funny political chachkies. The colorful blob is one of Desmond’s sculptures with this amazing stuff called cloud clay. ( the kids really love playing with it!) The vases are by Andrew Ludick in Ireland and the shaman is our friend."
Tate's got jams in his bones. Dad's a vinyl guru with a serious collection.
This fam knows how to get down!
Vintage ceremonial aprons of the Free Masons found at Brooklyn Flea, silkscreen is by Madrid based artist Remed.
Danielle's dad found the old Coca Cola sign on the side of the road.
Alexander Girard pillows are from Vitra and Hay pillows from Moma Store. The mermaid chandelier is original to the home.
Desmond's room- "as tidy as a five year old boy's room can be"- old pennants that used to hang in Thomas’ office along with Desmond’s own art hang on the walls. Bed is Land of Nod.
Buddy.
Handmade nap blanket by Danielle.
Triangle piece by Matt Irving. Danielle made the American flag collage that hangs in the back.
"I found the vintage school chair in my grandparents' attic along with the vintage children’s Schoenhut piano that has wooden keys!! The stuffed animals on the chair are made by Thomas and I. Land of Nod bedding. The crib is actually from Walmart. Vintage Bertoia diamond chair given to us as a house warming gift when we bought our first place in Brooklyn.
Hanging flags made by Thomas.
School House electric sconces watercolor by Justin Fines, and the little drawings on the door are by Thomas’ mom.
Vintage tapestry.
"I like our bedroom to be minimal, I find it soothing. The master bed is from Room and Board with our other cat Lloyd Christmas aka 'Panties.' Night stands are made of old barn wood that Thomas cut to size and the shelf brackets are by Bend.
Little house on the fireplace mantel was made by Thomas for a puppet commercial called "The Breath Easys" made for the EPA.
These two.
The third floor art studio has fostered a space for Danielle to reconnect to her deep relationship with art. With Desmond in kindergarten now, she has found time to craft and define her practice.
We love the idea of the suburbs providing the opportunity for Danielle's rediscovery... a self-described "homebody," she's appreciates the quiet and is rewarding herself the commitment back to her art.
Desi's art and ultrasound pics of Tate hang on the wall next to Danielle's work station.
Playing with the wiggly snake, her first sculpture. We're pretty much obsessed with the bubblegum colors and oddly-attractive shapes in her collection.
Desi the astronaut at his lego station in the studio.
One of Danielle's first paintings in its early stage.
It's quite an honor here at PS to see our friend's talent unfold.
Cozy guest room suited for family visits.
"Josh Gittleman stencil on window in the 3rd floor bathroom was a gift to us after I found a bunch of old windows on the side of a road in West Philadelphia for the artist. Its a stencil of Jackson Pollack pouring paint."
Danielle's recent series of paintings and sculptures shot by Thomas:
Paintings: acrylic, paper, matte medium on panel.
Sculptures: acrylic, matte medium, plaster, paper, glue, and wire.
Thank you one million-fold to these good friends and forever-neighbors!
